Varietal Shift

Historically, North Dakota has predominately produced 6 row barley for the malting and brewing industry.  Efficiencies in brewing technology, coupled with an increase in craft brewing, has resulted increased production of 2 row barley, thus displacing the amount of 6 row historically produced.  2 row barley provides higher levels of malt extract, thus allowing for brewing more beer.
